Metal chimney pipes, used on factory-built fireplaces, wood stoves, and many inserts, pass through either a roof flashing (often called a roof jack) or the top of a chase. Because the pipe expands and contracts as it heats and cools, there’s a small gap between the pipe and the flashing or chase top. A storm collar is a metal ring clamped around the chimney pipe just above that opening and sealed to the pipe, so water running down the pipe is shed out over the flashing instead of dripping through the gap.
On our prefabricated fireplace diagram, the storm collar sits just below the chimney cap. A Step in Time Chimney Sweeps is a licensed and insured chimney company that inspects, reseals, and replaces storm collars.
