The foundation of a masonry chimney is the most commonly improperly constructed unit of the entire system. Most contractors simply construct the foundation to fit the area below the chimney. Many times, the weight of the chimney will exceed the allowable soil pressure and can cause excessive settlement. Further, since most of the soil loads on the rear portion of the chimney, the foundation becomes eccentrically loaded. The rear portion of the foundation settles more then the front portion and causes the chimney to lean away from the home.
